How To's

Helpful Hints if your heating unit is not working! (Natural Gas, Propane or Electric)

1. Is there a thermostat?  Is it well above the room's temperature?  Run the temperature setting as far up & down as it will go several times, then set it well above the room's temperature (at least three degrees higher).

2. Does the thermostat require batteries?  The batteries may be bad, change them.

3. Check the clock setting for the time clock or thermostat.  Are the am & pm settings correct?

4. Make sure the power switch to the furnace or the furnace emergency switch has not been turned off accidentally.  If you have a summer fan switch & the summer fan will not work at the same time that you have "no heat", there is probably no electrical power getting to the unit.

5. Have you filters been changed lately?  If you have replaced your filter & the door is not on properly most furnaces will not work.

6. If there is no power, or a power outage has occured, the electrical components of your unit cannot operate.  If your power has been interrupted, but is now back on, the unit should start if you turn your thermostat all the way down, wait a couple minutes, then turn it back up.

7. Are your fuses OK?  They can fail without appearing to "blow".  If there is no power to your furnace & all the switches are on, replaced the furnace fuse (usually near the furnace) & the main fuse serving the furnace circuit.

8. Check to see if your furnace has a manual reset button.  Press one time only if the manual reset has been tripped.

IF YOU SMELL GAS CONTACT YOUR GAS COMPANY IMMEDIATELY!!

They will be able to find & diagnose a gas leaking faster than anyone else.

Changing your air filter is extremely important.  Many unnecessary service call are simply due to a cloged air filter.  This is a great step-by-step video on how to replace (and find) your air filter.
